The Richmond Strikers have teamed up with several local nonprofits to provide support and further their missions through meaningful events throughout the year. We wanted to take a moment to give our membership an overview of these community partnerships and make them aware of the many ways to get involved, including UMFS ORANGE DAY on Sunday, November 13.
UMFS is a statewide nonprofit agency that empowers high-risk children, their families, and communities throughout Virginia. From addressing behavioral and emotional issues to finding foster homes, UMFS relentlessly pursues solutions to help children and families succeed.
UMFS provides a variety of programs and services, including: treatment foster care that can lead to family placement and adoption, a residential treatment program that helps children heal from trauma, the Charterhouse School that helps students with special needs and autism, and Project LIFE for teens aging out of foster care.
Richmond Strikers Monthly Soccer Clinics
Since September 2015, our full-time Strikers coaches have spent one day each month working with UMFS’ Charterhouse School students during their Physical Education classes. They have gotten the opportunity to connect and build relationships with the students while sharing their passion for the game of soccer.
UMFS Orange Weekend/Orange Day
In 2015, over 200 volunteers from across the Richmond Strikers organization descended upon UMFS’ Broad Street Campus to transform it into an inviting place for the holidays, a time of year that can be very difficult for many of the children at UMFS. Our volunteers cleaned classrooms, created teacher/student appreciation cards, decorated 30 trees with holiday lights, and cleaned up campus!
In 2016, we will be holding UMFS Orange Day on Sunday, November 13, from 1:30-5:00 PM. Volunteers can sign up here!
Volunteers will meet in the Charterhouse School auditorium (3900 West Broad Street) and illuminate the UMFS campus by stringing lights on the trees lining Broad Street. Volunteers looking to do more, or those who cannot attend on Sunday, can donate a Holiday “Take-Home” Food Kit that will be sent home with a student over holiday break where he/she may not get regular meals.
Each kit should be assembled in a reusable grocery bag and consists of:
1 Boxed Stuffing Mix (like Stovetop)
1 Instant Mashed Potatoes in boxes or packets
2 Jars of Turkey Gravy or Dried Gravy Mix Packets
2 Canned Yams
1 Cranberry Sauce
3 Canned Veggies (green beans, corn, peas)
1 Cornbread Mix
2 Canned Pumpkin or Fruit Pie Filling
1 Pie Crust Mix
Salt and Pepper
The mission of Goochland Free Clinic & Family Services is to provide access to health care and basic human services to the Goochland community.
Score Against Hunger Food Drive
In support of Goochland County's Hunger Awareness Week, the Strikers banded together to collect non-perishable food items to be donated to and distributed by the Goochland Free Clinic & Family Services. We collected over 450 pounds of food in 2015 and are hoping for even more each year moving forward!
Richmond Strikers/GFCFS Coat Drive
In light of the success of our first two food drives, the Strikers decided to hold a fall Coat Drive to support the Goochland Free Clinic & Family Services Clothes Closet. Annually, the Clothes Closet serves over 822 clients, including 344 children. The Strikers community responded with incredible generosity and donated a van-full of coats.
