Richmond Strikers Rugby State Tournament Recap

Richmond Strikers Rugby State Tournament Recap

This past weekend, Richmond Strikers Rugby played in their first state tournament as a program at River City Sportsplex in Midlothian, VA. Strikers Rugby were represented by the 5th & 6th grade boys’ team, the 7th & 8th grade boys’ team, the High School Varsity boys’ team and the high school girls’ varsity combination team with Prince William and Vienna (called “Family”). In addition to the four teams competing, we also had several 3rd & 4th grade boys and middle school girls compete in motley games.

The 5th and 6th grade team and the high school girls’ team both took home state championships. The high school boys’ varsity team were the plate winners which placed them third in the state while the 7th & 8th grade team were the shield winners which placed them fifth in the state. In addition to the successful team efforts the Strikers had this past weekend, we had three players take home tournament MVPs - Cairo Kendrick (3rd & 4th grade coed), Hannah Johnson (middle school girls) and Theo Cross (5th & 6th grade).

*Theo Cross named MVP of 5th/6th grade boys’ division for tournament.

*Only allowed one score throughout the entire tournament.

7th & 8th Grade Boys:

(L) Richmond Strikers 0 - Loudon 7

Game Notes: We played an incredible game and were in there in most of the game, but we lost on a last second try.  We did have exceptional play by Michael Mitchell and Owen Brown. Luke Willis was the man of the match.

(W) Richmond Strikers vs Springfield West End (No score recorded - large win by Strikers)

Game Notes: Great improvement over the first game. We responded with many runs up the middle breaking defense and eliminating scores by excellent defense.  Plays were made by almost all players, but there were a few break away runs by Ned Magnum, Kyle Smith, Mike Mitchell, and Luke Willis. The Man of the Match was Ned Mangum.

(L) Richmond Strikers vs Vienna Black
Game Notes: The game was one sided but we played excellent defense.  We executed our plan to perfection, but we never really had possession of the ball. Kyle Smith was asked to play outside center and played a great game forcing Vienna to keep the ball in tight. Kyle was the man of the match.

(W) SHIELD FINAL: Richmond Strikers 31 - Great Falls 19

Game Notes: Great Falls had beaten us last week. Just before kick off, we were informed that they only had 14 players not 15 so we reduced our numbers to 14 to accommodate in the spirit of the game. We had break out moments and tries from Sean LeHew, Michael Mitchell, Max Buono and Ned Magnum. This was truly a team effort and probably the best game we played all day.

High School Varsity Boys:

(L) Richmond Strikers 7 - Legion 12
Game Notes: The Strikers were competitive throughout the entire match, but costly turnovers at inopportune times would be their undoing.

(W) PLATE FINAL Richmond Strikers 14 - Benedictine 3

Game Notes: The Strikers would rebound from their disappointment to defeat local Richmond crosstown and Division II rivals Benedictine.

It must be noted that the Richmond Strikers HSB-V is a Division II team who lead a very successful spring 2018 season. The team was able to defeat all Division II clubs and lead a successful campaign and against Division I clubs. Below is a breakdown of the successes for the 2018 spring season:

  • Plate Champions and 3rd place at the 2018 Rugby Virginia State Tournament

  • 2018 Division II Rugby Virginia Champions as a result of an undefeated Division II regular season

  • 2018 Richmond City Cup Champions

  • Undefeated against Division I Virginia Peninsula High School Varsity teams

  • Competitive games against top tier Division I clubs

High School Girls (combining with Prince William and Vienna):
The High School Girls Richmond Strikers have teamed up with Prince William and Vienna all season to form a united "Family" team. This last Saturday, Family united one final time for the Virginia State Championships against another combined opponent made up of girls playing for Fort Hunt and Loudon, coached by Kat Aversano. A loss the previous weekend to Springfield/ West End propelled the Family to double down on their efforts in practice in the week leading up to the game, helping them to put forward a strong team focused on forward momentum and back line agility. Family emerged the victor in the game with a final score of 51-5, with 9 tries and 3 conversions, ending the Spring season as the Virginia State Champs.

With the spring season officially over, the Strikers look forward to a couple of weeks off before diving into the summer season.
