Deep Run’s Brian Ownby named NSCAA High School All-American

The 2008 VHSL boy’s soccer class “AAA” State Champions, the Deep Run Wildcats, have added another stellar award to their expanding trophy case, an NSCAA All-American!  Brian Ownby, a 2008 DRHS graduate, was named by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America as a 2008 High School All-American.  To qualify for the award Ownby had to be named to the State team, then he earned Region III recognition and finally, the A-A award.  Ownby is the first All American (in any sport,) from DRHS, a school that opened in 2002 and has only played five varsity seasons!

Ownby spent four seasons with the Wildcat varsity team and led them to a four year record of 60w-16- 5t.  During the same four year span, the upstart Wildcats claimed two season titles in the Colonial District (2006, ’08) and three consecutive CD tournament titles, 2006-2008.  The Wildcat’s qualified for the Central Region playoffs during three of Ownby’s years, but lost in the semi-final’s in 2006 (to Clover Hill, 4-3ot) and 2007 (to Hanover, 2-1.)  {*Ownby was called into a US National Team camp during the 2007 Regional tournament and missed the ‘Cats playoff games.}  The Wildcat’s culminated Ownby’s senior season (along with his nine senior classmates,) by earning the Central Region runner-up trophy, then marching to the VHSL State Championship with a 1-0 victory over Robinson High School.

Ownby, currently a freshman at the University of Virginia, finished his career at DRHS with 58 goals, 34 assists and 150 career points in 64 games played!  He was named Colonial District Player of the Year for three consecutive seasons(2006-’08,) Central Region POTY (2008,) and the Virginia State POTY in 2008!  He was named to the VHSL East All-Star team in 2008 and subsequently earned the MVP Award.  Additionally, Ownby received the following awards for his 2008 play:  Richmond Times-Dispatch All-Metro Team; Digital Sports 1st Team and DS Boy’s Soccer POTY.  He was also recognized by his DR teammates and coaching staff as the team MVP (twice,) Golden Boot Award (three,) and Silver Assists Award (twice) winner.

Brian is a product of the Richmond Strikers Soccer Club where he played for numerous coaches/teams and he finished as a member of the u18 US Academy team.  He has also received numerous calls to the US National Team programs; an alternate for the u17 World Cup team, and a member of the u18 team (2007-08) and a recent call to the u20 team.
